NEWS BRIEF
The SARS-COV2 pandemic has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on our day to day life and on the way we perceived our world. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency and on March 11, 2020, as a global pandemic. Since its outbreak, it has spread to almost all countries around the world and with the changing variants it had been responsible for millions of infections and deaths. It has caused an unprecedented challenge to public health. We the Nuclear Medicine community is of no exception. We also needed to adjust ourselves to the present situation regarding our daily and professional life. Many of our SNMB members have been infected by COVID-19 and lost their near and dear ones. We were not able to hold the 25th SNMB conference in due time. However, by the grace of the Almighty we are going to hold our Silver Jubilee 25th conference of SNMB on 20 May, 2022. A lot has happened in the last three years. Here a brief of those events is highlighted below.
The 24th National Conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Bangladesh was successfully held in Sonargaon Royal Resort, Sonargaon, Narayanganj on 22 March, 2019. It was attended by 140 participants including SNMB members, SNMB Associates, SNMBT members, accompanying persons, trade delegates as well as guests and volunteers. Architect Yeafesh Osman, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of The People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the inaugural session as chief guest. Mr. Mahbubul Hoq, Chairman BAEC and Mr. Md Anwar Hossain, Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology were present as special guests. Prof. Dr.Selim. M Ansari, Ex Director, INMAS, Bogura, Prof. Dr. Md Abu Taher Ex Director, INMAS, Rangpur, Prof. Dr. Faisal Kabir, Ex Director International Affairs Division, Prof. Dr. Shahana Afroz, Ex Chairman BAEC received the “Life Time Achievement Award” for their contribution towards the development of Nuclear Medicine. The scientific sessions were highlighted by four plenary lectures. This year there were four lectures in the plenary sessions. The participants also shared their scientific research works through the twelve preferred oral presentations. The AGM was held in the afternoon on the same day. The new executive body for the term 2019-2020 was formed where Prof. Dr. Raihan Hussain was elected as the President and Prof. Dr. Faria Nasreen was elected as the General Secretary of SNMB. Amidst the eye-catching night view of Sonargaon Royal Resort close to the ancient Panam city the evening was offered with nice relaxation as the Gala dinner and cultural show took place. The raffle draw took place to add enjoyment and laughter. It was a pleasure for us to have your whole-heartedly support and full cooperation to hold and make success this great event.










A scientific seminar on “Updates in Nuclear Medicine: BMD & PET CT” was jointly organized by SNMB and INMAS, Rajshahi which was held on 19th October, 2019 in Aminuddin Gallery, RMC Campus. Three speakers from NINMAS, Dhaka and one speaker from RMC delivered their lectures. Prof. Dr. Md Nowshad Ali, Principal, RMC graced the occasion as chief guest.

A scientific seminar on “Updates in Nuclear Medicine and screening of Congenital Hypothyroidism in Newborn Babies” was jointly organized by “Screening of Congenital Hypothyroidism in Newborn Babies (Phase 2)” project and INMAS, Barishal which was held on 24th February, 2020 in the Lecture Gallery, Sher-E-Bangla Medical Campus. Five speakers from NINMAS, Dhaka delivered their lectures.


Due to the unprecedented COVID 19 situation many scheduled physical conferences on 2020 were converted to virtual platform. Many SNMB members attended the 3 day virtual conference of IPET 2020 (International Conference on Molecular Imaging and Clinical PET CT) in the Era of Theranostics held on 24-26 November, 2020 organized by IAEA. ASNC 2020 (American Society of Nuclear Cardiology) and ASNC 2021 were attended virtually by many SNMB members.
15th International Conference on Radiopharmaceutical Therapy (ICRT 2020) was held virtually and hosted by Bangladesh on 5-6 December, 2020. The participation from Bangladesh was remarkable. Prof. Dr. Raihan Hussain gave the welcome address and chaired a session. There were two invited lectures delivered by Prof. Dr. Faridul Alam VC, BUHS and Prof. Dr. Faria Nasreen, CMO, NINMAS. Prof. Dr. Fatima Begum, CMO, NINMAS chaired a session also. There were three poster presentations. This was a really great event for Bangladesh. It was the first time that SNMB organized a global event. Though it was virtual as it could not be held physically in Cox’s Bazar as planned due to COVID 19.
Prof Dr. Kamaluddin Ahmed, founder of SNMB was awarded the life time achievement and Prof. Dr. M.A Karim received a special recognition award. Prof. Dr. Raihan Hussain and Prof. Dr. Faria Nasreen were given recognition awards for hosting the virtual conference.

“WARMTH Award Presenting Ceremony” organized by SNMB was held on 11 March 2021 at NINMAS, Dhaka. “WARMTH Lifetime Achievement Award” was presented to Prof. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Founder President of SNMB and former member, Bio-Science, BAEC and “WARMTH Lifetime Recognition Award” was presented to Prof. Dr. M.A.Karim , Former President of SNMB and former Chairman, BAEC. In addition “WARMTH Recognition Award” was presented to Prof. Dr. Raihan Hussain, President, SNMB and Prof. Dr. Faria Nasreen, General Secretary, SNMB for hosting the virtual 15th ICRT (International Conference on Radiopharmaceutical Therapy). This event was an extraordinary reunion among past and present colleagues of Nuclear Medicine.

A Webinar on “Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine” was held on 2 July, 2021 organized by SNMB. There were two speakers Prof. Dr. Zeenat Jabin, CMO, NINMAS and Dr. Anwar-Ul- Azim, PSO, NINMAS. There were four panelists, Prof. Dr. Md. Sanowar Hossain, Chaiman, BAEC, Prof. Dr. Ashoke Kumar Paul, Member Bio-Science, BAEC, Prof. Dr. M.F. Kabir, Senior Consultant and coordinator, Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging, Evercare Hospital, Dhaka and Prof. Dr. Shamim Momtaz Ferdousi Begum, Director, NINMAS, Dhaka. The webinar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Raihan Hussain, President, SNMB.
Nuclear Medicine Update 2019 & Inaugural PET/CT course was held on 15-17 August, 2019 in Singapore. Dr. Rawnak Afrin received fellowship grant. She also received best poster (3rd position) in 16th Biennial National Convention & Scientific Seminar, BSRI, 2021. SGCR WIRES Virtual congress was held on 11-15 August, 2021. There were two oral presentations and three poster presentations from the SNMB members of INMAS, Dhaka.
The SNMB members attended the 4th Annual National Conference & Scientific meetings of “Bangladesh Thyroid Society” virtually on 19th March 2021. Dr. Afroza Akhter, SMO, INMAS, Dhaka received the 1st prize and Dr Shaila Sharmin, SMO, INMAS, Dhaka received the 3rd prize for the best oral presentation. The 33rd National Conference of Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography was held virtually on 8 October, 2021 which was attended by the SNMB members.
20th Annual General Meeting of ARCCNM was held on 1-3 November, 2021 virtually. There was one invited lecture by Prof. Dr Raihan Hussain and five oral presentations from Bangladesh. The presenters were Dr. Zeenat Jabin, Dr. Nasreen Sultana, Dr. Jharna Das, Dr. Urnas Islam and Shamsunnahar Raka.
61st Annual Scientific meeting of the Japanese Society of Nuclear Medicine was held on 4-6 November, 2021 virtually. Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas and Dr. Afroza Akhter had their oral presentations in the conference.
World Organization of Family Doctors has awarded SNMB life member Prof. Dr. Kanu Bala “WONCA’s most prestigious award “Fellowship” in November 2021.
All the Institutes of Nuclear Medicine of BAEC received the “Appreciation Award” from BAEC for their relentless service in the health sector amidst COVID pandemic.

The Quick Response Team (QRT) for COVID 19 formed by Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission which served the COVID-19 affected BAEC employee and their family members, was awarded “Appreciation Award” by BAEC for their service during the COVID pandemic on 30 December, 2021. The QRT team consisted of twelve members including eight SNMB members (Dr. B.K Bose, Dr. Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique, Dr. Mahmudur Rahman Mozumder, Dr. Jinia Afrin Khan, Dr. Afroza Akhter, Dr. Nabeel Fahmi Ali and Dr. Debobroto Ghosh) and was headed by Prof. Dr. Faria Nasreen as the Convener

Dr. Afroza Akhter, SMO, INMAS, Dhaka received “Certificate of appreciation” as COVID-19 warrior from Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) for outstanding efforts in the 10 months long voluntary program of COVID-19 syndromic case management by tele-consultation.
